Corsica 2012 – TMM: “Tuarelli –> Galéria”

Even though the third stage should’ve been much easier than the previous one, we decided to wake up at the same time as the day before, at 6 o’clock. Once again, packing took us about 90 minutes and shortly before 7:40 we left Tuarelli and set out to the west, along the river Fango.

The first part of the hike was quite easy and very nice, with the beautiful views to the river and red rocks around it. After an hour and twenty minutes, we came to the place I’ve already been to – Ponte Vecchiu bridge over Fango. It’s really great spot (especially for swimming/bathing in river), worth even a bigger detour (e.g. from D 81 between Calvi and Porto).

After Tra Mare e Monti crosses the bridge, it goes for a while along the road (D 351 and then D 81) to Galéria. I didn’t like that part very much, luckily after just about 2 km long it ends in the lowest elevation point of Tuarelli – Galéria stage, at cca. 22 meters ASL. We got there at about 9:20, an hour and forty minutes after leaving camp.

At that moment, we had behind us nearly half of today’s stage – the easier one. In the next half, TMM was mostly a narrow path, leading up and down the hill. The ascent was never too steep, and maximum elevation was quite low (only about 180 m ASL), but this part was still quite exhausting. Main reason: there was quite a big heat, even though it wasn’t even an afternoon. We were sweating a lot, which is why we decided to set out even earlier in the morning on the next day.

Shortly before noon we came to the highest point (cca. 180 m ASL, as I said before), from which we could already see town of Galeria under us. Getting down there was really easy and less than hour later we were in gîte d’étape. Unlike the previous one, gîte in Galéria became my favorite. More than a camp it looked like house with a big garden, it was calm and almost empty, not very expensive (unfortunately can’t remember exact price) and, last but not least, there was a really nice young (and English-speaking) receptionist.

Galéria was the first place where we approached the sea, so naturally just after building our tent we went to a local beach. After a year long pause (since Czech Republic is inland, there’s not many opportunities), I liked swimming in the sea quite a lot, even though I was very surprised how cold the water seemed. Much colder than a day before in Fango

After we returned to camp, we met Angelika from Poland, the only other hiker going in the same direction as we were… She was starting in Galéria, where she came from Vizzavona, after finishing whole GR20 Sud! (When I heard that, I got a little depressed, realizing how tired I was just after 3 stages of MUCH easier track…:-))
