Cycling trip Choceň – Seč and back (Day 2: “lowlands”)

After long break, I finally have time to finish the story of my two day long cycling trip to Seč and back. I’m sorry it took me so long, but I’ve had a lot of things to do lately, since the school semester started…

When I woke up at about half past six in the morning, it was raining… Luckily it didn’t last long and so 90 minutes later I had everything packed and was leaving Seč by road nr. 337, leading to the north-west to Třemošnice.

Start Finish Distance Max. elevation Min. elevation Total ascent
Seč Choceň 95.8 km 542.3 m 208.4 m 2051 m

However, I left the road few hundred meters before the town and went to the village of Podhradí instead, to see ruins of Lichnice/Lichtenburg castle. Then I continued to the north to Míčov located on the top of the hill at about 530 m ASL. It was my last bigger ascent, because from here, landscape quickly descends down to the lowlands of the river Labe/Elbe – which is where I was heading. Read More (photos and rest of the story) »

Cycling trip Choceň – Seč and back (Day 1: “highlands”)

My college semester starts next week and, to have a nice end of “holidays”, I decided to go for one last cycling trip. I’ve never gone to a (cycling) trip longer than one day and this seemed as a nice opportunity to try it.

On Monday evening I packed a tent, sleeping bag, some clothes (and all other things necessary for two days’ long trip) and loaded it on my bike – wanted to be ready and able to set out early on the next day.

Start Finish Distance Max. elevation Min. elevation Total ascent
Choceň Seč 122.2 km 758.6 m 280.4 m 2051 m

On Tuesday I left my home at 7 o’clock and headed to the south-east. The first 50 kilometers were almost the same as during my trip to Znojmo – I went via Litomyšl and Polička to Jimramov. The only difference was that while on the first time I went from Polička to Jimramov along the valley of Bílý potok brook, on the second time I used a little shorter, but much more exhausting way via village Korouhev, during which I had to climb to more than 645 m ASL! Cycling trip to Zemská brána and Deštné

The weather was very nice on Saturday and that’s why I decided to go for a little longer cycling trip. I wanted to see Zemská brána (literally “Land’s Gate” in English), beautiful natural reservation on Czech-Polish border.

Main POIs Distance Max. elevation Min. elevation Total ascent
Zemská brána, Šerlich, Deštné 137 km 1013 m 272 m 1720 m

I set out from Choceň at 7:40 a.m. and went along the river Tichá Orlice (“Silent Eagle”) via Ústí nad Orlicí to Letohrad. There are nice and comfortable cycling tracks (route nr. 4061 Choceň – Ústí nad Orlicí and route nr. 4048 Ústí n. O. – Letohrad), so after less than two hours I got to Letohrad. Cycling trip to Kozlovský kopec, Andrlův Chlum and Vrbice

As I said here before, I like cycling a lot. My tracks usually lead to one of three hills that are located in our region – Vrbice (455 m ASL) near Kostelec nad Orlicí, Andrlův Chlum (559 m ASL) near Ústí nad Orlicí and Kozlovský kopec (601 m ASL) near Česká Třebová. That’s why in June I decided that sometimes during summer holidays I must try climbing to all of those hills during one trip. Yesterday I managed to fulfill this resolution.

Kozlovský kopec, Andrlův Chlum, Vrbice 82.6 km 601 m 275 m 1245 m

I set out from my hometown Choceň (285 m ASL) at quarter past eight, going in the south-east direction to Sloupnice – along the very same road I used a few weeks ago during my trip to Znojmo. In Sloupnice I turned right to the cycling route 4145, leading all the way to Kozlovský kopec (kopec = hill in Czech). Read More (photos and rest of the story) »

Cycling trip Choceň – Znojmo

I like cycling a lot and usually at least once or twice a week I go for a 30 – 50 km long trip around the town where I live. However, for this Tuesday I had planned something a little different – I had decided to try if I can ride more than 150 kilometers long track, from my hometown Choceň to Znojmo, that is located in South Moravia near Austrian border.

Start Finish Distance Max. elevation Min. elevation Total ascent
Choceň Znojmo 169.3 km 724 m 238 m 2390 m

I set out from Choceň at 6:20 in the morning.  It was quite early, but I had a very long journey in front of me and wanted to have enough time for it.

First town I visited during my trip was Litomyšl, town famous for its Renaissance chateau (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and as the birthplace of composer Bedřich Smetana. I arrived there after an hour and after first 20 kilometers of my journey.

Geo-cycling trip – Přívrat, Toulovcovy maštale

Hello again, as I promised earlier, I’ll write here about the geo-cycling trip I went to last Saturday.

I set out from my hometown Choceň at quarter past ten. Since I’ve already found practically all traditional caches around Choceň, I knew this trip would have to be a little longer.

My first goal was to find four caches hidden near village of Přívrat, situated about 15 km to SW from my hometown. The first cache I managed to found was GC12H7V Na Mandlu, located in forest near local recreational area. The cache wasn’t too difficult to find, so I could quickly continue. My next waypoint was cache G26ZOV U Sv. Antonicka. Getting to it was quite challenging, touristic trail leading there wasn’t good enough for riding, so I had to push my bike up the hill – and quite a steep one. Finding the cache itself was very easy for me – I came there just in time to see another geocacher, betisa logging into it. I liked this cache a lot, it is located on a remote (and very nice) place in woods, it’s not possible to get there by car and it’s on a hill so man must (at least a little:-)) deserve it. Betisa was there by bike too, so together we rode to two other nearby caches, GC1F7F6 Miroslavova zeme and GC1XG38 Privrat – sportovni a detsky areal. The first one took us some time to find, the second one was much easier. After we found them, I said bye to betisa, who needed to go home, and continued in my way. Read More »
